Welcome to the Class of 2002 News!
Welcome to the first edition of the Pharmacy Class of 2002 Newsletter! We hope that this newsletter will serve to keep the class in touch with what is going on in the School of Pharmacy as well as with our classmates that are spread across the state. So, keep the submissions coming - we can't generate a newsletter without your help.
Included in this edition of the newsletter, we have a report from the newly-christened "Aggies", an inside look at the life of a hospital patient and a report from the OSACA. As well, we have the first installment of an ongoing column dedicated to answering questions about the 2 unit Pharmaceutical Care Project. A "12 Step Program" to the completion of the PharmCare Project will be distributed shortly. Other ongoing columns include a list of notable personal dates, a list of important upcoming deadlines and some board exam review questions.
So ENJOY!

PharmCare Project - Questions and Answers
Below are some questions students have asked. Answers in italics.
If I understand it correctly, are we to come up with a problem that currently exists in the pharmacy profession…and then come up with some sort of study on our own to assess whether an existing intervention is effective? Or are we supposed to propose an intervention that will potentially solve the problem?
Well you could propose an intervention study but if it in any way would alter the patient's care it would have to go through IRB and likely require patient consent. This is not advised as the process would be long and difficult.
We're to find a preceptor that is an expert in the subject matter?
You are to find a preceptor/mentor who will provide advice and guidance but they do not have to be an expert. In most cases I think that preceptor would be in some way related to the project: either working where you are considering doing the project or work in the area you are considering, etc.
Will a research project (CP198) with Dr. X satisfy the project requirement? To whom should I submit a proposal of this research?
Not knowing the specifics, I can not answer with any certainty. However, we are open to discussing any option, and my guess is that the faculty would be fairly liberal in their interpretation of what qualifies as a "project". If the faculty has agreed to have you work on this as your project, then from my end it would be OK.It is very possible that your project will be an extension of something you did/are doing in a clerkship. Please note, however, that it would not be appropriate to count your hours twice - you must put in 70-80 hours on top of the original course work.
You should submit your project proposal to your faculty mentor.
I am very confused. Who should I talk to?
Students can contact their site directors:
SF: Mike Winter, Betty Dong
Davis: Barbara Sauer
SD: Bob Weibert
LAOC: Peter Ambrose
Students can also contact the class officers - we have had meetings with them to help provide information so they can also serve as an information resource.
